Juanita High School Work Party Clears an Amazing Swath of Ivy

Debbie, park neighbor, led a group of 7 students in clearing ivy from inside the loop trail. In this park you have to tip your head back as far as you can to see the beautiful tall Douglas Firs, Western Red Cedars, Western Hemlocks and Big Leaf Maples. The kids cleared ivy about 20 feet by 6 feet deep. It is amazing to walk along the trail and see how this group of students released a huge Big Leaf Maple from a carpet of ivy. This area is very wet with a meandering stream and soggy ground. I didn’t get to see what the kids looked like after clearing the ivy from around the stream, but my guess is the mud was an inch thick on them. Thanks to all of you on behalf of every tree, the Indian Plum – Salmonberry – Low Oregon Grape shrubs and ferns that escaped the ivy grasp today.
