Culverts Clogged by the Springs

Spring running down the East side of the path.

The path along the east side of the trail is becoming muddy. There are at least three springs along the path, probably more. Each spring runs into a shallow culvert. At this time of the year, the culvert area becomes clogged with silt, huge Big Leaf Maple leaves, stones and branches. The path gets really saturated. There are very few, if any stones left on the path in this area, so the dirt turns to mud in the winter. It’s common to see conifer branches thrown on the muddy path to make it passable. I cleaned a trench along the west side of the path allowing the water to trickle down into the culverts. The leaves, weeds, blackberry canes and horsetail are really clogging up this wet side of the path.
